Terms of use
The short version
- MotorLog helps you keep track of your car. It doesn't replace your handbook, your garage, the MOT or GOV.UK.
- Always check important dates (MOT, tax, insurance) with the official source. You're responsible for keeping your car legal and safe.
- Your data lives on your phone, so back it up. If you lose your phone or uninstall the app, we can't get it back.
- Be fair with the reg lookup: look up cars you own, keep or are thinking of buying, and don't automate it.
1. About these terms
These terms cover your use of the MotorLog app and its reg lookup service ("MotorLog"), made by an independent developer ("we", "us"). By using MotorLog you agree to them. Our privacy policy explains how data is handled. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
2. What MotorLog is
MotorLog is a free app for logging your car's service history, costs and mileage, and for reminding you about MOT/NCT, road tax, insurance and servicing. Founding-tester codes may unlock extra features at no cost. If we ever charge for anything, we'll show the price clearly before you pay, and Google Play's terms will apply to the payment.
3. Information is guidance, not advice
- Service schedules are based on published manufacturer and Haynes data where we have it, and on general guidance where we don't. They can be wrong for your exact car. Your handbook, service indicator and garage come first.
- Reg lookup and MOT history come from the DVSA. MotorLog is independent and isn't affiliated with the DVSA, DVLA or GOV.UK. We show what the DVSA returns, but it can be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
- Reading invoices and screenshots (text recognition) is automatic and can misread things. Check the filled-in values before you save them.
- Reminders depend on your phone. Battery savers, notification settings, a dead or replaced phone, or an uninstall can stop them. Don't rely on MotorLog as your only reminder.
- The seller's service passport is a summary of what you've recorded. It isn't an official document or a guarantee to a buyer. Make sure it's accurate before you share it.
You're responsible for making sure your vehicle is roadworthy, has a valid MOT (or NCT), is taxed and is insured. To check an MOT or tax date officially, use GOV.UK (or ncts.ie in Ireland).
4. Using the reg lookup fairly
- Use it to look up vehicles you own or keep, or have a genuine reason to check (for example, one you're thinking of buying).
- Don't scrape it, automate it, resell it, try to get round its limits, or use it to find out about people.
- It has limits (currently about 10 lookups a minute and 100 a day per connection). It may be unavailable at times, and we can change or withdraw it, for example if the DVSA changes its service.
5. Your data and backups
Your records are stored on your device, not with us, so you're responsible for backing them up (Settings › Back up everything). Backup and export files aren't encrypted. Look after them, and think before you share them.
6. Changes and availability
We may update MotorLog, add or remove features, or stop offering it. We'll try to give notice of big changes in the app's release notes. If we stop, the app will keep working offline with your existing data, but online features such as the reg lookup may stop.
7. Our responsibility to you
We build MotorLog with care, but it's provided free and "as is". As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for loss or damage caused by inaccurate data from third parties, misread scans, missed reminders, lost data you didn't back up, or decisions you make based on the app. We also aren't responsible for losses that weren't foreseeable, or for business losses.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Nothing affects your legal rights as a consumer.
8. The law that applies
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland, Northern Ireland or Ireland, you can also bring a claim in your local courts, and you keep the consumer protections of the place you live.
9. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we'll update this page and its date. If a change matters, we'll mention it in the app's release notes. If you keep using MotorLog after a change, the new terms apply.
